Resources Needed to Become a Professional Soccer Player (or make it to you next level)

Updated: Jun 23, 2022

If you are serious about taking your game to the next level, spend the next 5 minutes reading this article.

I know I’m not the only one who has dreamed of becoming a professional soccer player. Since I could walk, I had a ball at my feet. Since I could watch television, I had Premier League games on every weekend.

I know I’m not the only one who has spent countless hours training with my teams and on my own. Every opportunity I had to play, I took it. Every opportunity I had to take my game to the next level, I took it.

As you get older, it gets harder and harder to progress through the ranks. It was hard enough to go from High School/Club/Academy soccer to College soccer, and it was just as hard to go from College to Semi-Pro. (Read about my path here)

Here I am, doing everything I can to fulfill my dreams, and I know I’m not the only one.

I’ve learned a ton throughout my career, especially from guys/girls who HAVE made it to the professional level, and I want to share these tips with you!

  1. Highlight Video/CV - Without a highlight video, it’s tough for a coach, scout, or agent to see your abilities without watching you live. Not only do you need a highlight video, but a professional-looking video. Your highlight video should include a multitude of categories: attacking play (goals, assists, created chances), defensive play (tackles, interceptions, positioning), communication, awareness, etc.

  2. Playing Resume - On top of a highlight video, a professional playing resume will help you tremendously. Such resumes include your skills, playing experience, stats, and contact info. It looks great if you include your resume in your highlight video as well.

  3. Network/Connections - The above items are just about useless if you aren’t actively connecting with people. Create good connections with teammates and coaches because you never know where they might end up, and if they like you as a player, they would be likely to recommend you. Likewise, finding an agent or agency to work with can also boost your network massively. However, there are a lot of “agents“ out there who are after your money. An actual agent DOES NOT require a fee unless you are under contract where they get a percentage of your wages.

Of course, these are things you need on top of being an elite player. Having good resources help elite players become professionals. At the end of the day, your play has to back up everything seen in your highlight video, on your resume, and everything said by people advocating for you.
